Fierce are the attacks launched by top officials of SYRIZA in the government on the occasion of the leak of the personal data of expatriates from the Ministry of the Interior to Anna Michelle Asimakopoulou.

“The agreed-upon manipulations with which the New Democracy tries to “patch up” the issue communicatively are not answers, which we demand” Sokratis Fammelos emphasizes in his statement, stressing that Mitsotakis, Kerameos and ND are deeply exposed.
“When the government representative says that the e-mails left the YP.ES and ended up in the ND to continue the route to a ND MEP, this means that there was a communication channel of the ministry that is responsible for the elections – and not only for the European Parliament – with the ND. What else can we assume? This case is definitely foul-smelling and scandalous and will concern us in the immediate future” says Voula Kehagia for her part, stressing that the dismissal of the two secretaries of the ministry does not cover SYRIZA…
“With the expulsion of Anna Michel Asimakopoulou from the ND’s European ballot, the government admitted its guilt for the scandal of the leak of thousands of emigrants’ e-mail addresses to the MEP. A scandal whose true depth and extent remain to be seen. However, with the impeachment of the Secretary General of the Ministry of the Interior, Michalis Stavrianoudakis, and the “resignation” of the Diaspora Secretary of the ND, Nikos Theodoropoulos, the government confirms the operation of the Ministry of the Interior as a partisan “front shop” of the ND, something he admitted today and vividly described , the government representative” the main opposition party said in a statement.
“I call on the prime minister to stop hiding. No matter how many atoning victims he sacrifices, this reality will haunt him” Stefanos Kasselakis had said earlier.

The announcement of the Press Office
“With the expulsion of Anna Michel Asimakopoulou from the ND’s European ballot, the government admitted its guilt for the scandal of the leak of thousands of emigrants’ e-mail addresses to the MEP. A scandal whose true depth and extent remain to be seen. However, with the impeachment of the Secretary General of the Ministry of the Interior, Michalis Stavrianoudakis, and the “resignation” of the Diaspora Secretary of the ND, Nikos Theodoropoulos, the government confirms the operation of the Ministry of the Interior as a partisan “front store” of the ND, something he admitted today and vividly described, the government representative. For this reason alone, Ms. Kerameos is politically exposed and owes an explanation, as does the government as a whole. We remind you that the ND Diaspora Secretary was rewarded with a renewal of his term in this position on February 26 – about a month after the passing of the letter vote law – by Mr. Mitsotakis himself. Obviously the right man, in the right position, as far as the political value system of the ND is concerned.
Only one week passed, from March 7, when Mrs. Kerameos assured that the Ministry of Internal Affairs had nothing to do with the leaking of the e-mail addresses. The government spokesman and other top government officials had done the same.
In the case of Ms. Asimakopoulou, we may have another case of “sit aside for a while until she is forgotten and you come back”, as Mr. Mitsotakis is used to. However, there are questions from which the Prime Minister cannot escape without cost: what else are they not telling us? Was the MEP the only one who gained access to the personal data of thousands of citizens or just the first to be exposed by using it? Who else gained access and what data? How many and who else are involved in the scandal?
In any case, society is faced, once again, with an anti-institutional “prototype” of the government, which obviously has its purpose: the “punishments” were imposed before the official evidence of the investigations was presented and the culprits were precisely identified and the misdemeanors.
Another cover-up operation is unfolding before the eyes of the citizens, another case of political and individual rights being trivialized, another reason for dragging us into Europe. How many scandals can the government’s propaganda machine absorb? Four ongoing investigations over two weeks and no results, no announcement.”
The statement of the President of the KO, Sokratis Famellos:
“Two weeks after the disclosure of the use of personal data of our fellow citizens by Mrs. Asimakopoulou – to promote her candidacy -, it was announced that her candidacy is being withdrawn from the European elections and that the Secretary General of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Secretary of Foreign Affairs have submitted their resignations ND, while reports talk about cartomancy.
From the beginning we had pointed out the seriousness of the leakage of personal data, which concerns a violation of the Constitution, basic European rules and the rule of law in our country, and for this reason on 5.3.2024 we met the president of the Personal Data Protection Authority, Konstantinos Menudakos. The agreed-upon manipulations with which the New Democracy tries to ‘patched up’ the issue in communication are not answers, which we demand!
Mr. Mitsotakis and Mrs. Kerameos are heavily exposed, as is the New Democracy party as a whole. The personal data that citizens provide to the state is not a tool for the promotion of ND nor the spoils of party mechanisms and party offices.
A full and rapid investigation of the scandal is required, attribution of criminal responsibilities but also the assumption of political responsibility. And since it is true that the data leak took place in May 2023, the issue also concerns the caretaker government at the time and the recent parliamentary elections.”
But at the same time, a series of new questions arise for which Mr. Mitsotakis and the government must provide convincing answers with absolute transparency:
– Who leaked the personal data to third parties in this particular case?
– Who will take political responsibility and when?
– Is it possible that Mr. Mitsotakis was completely ignorant of the way in which the New Democracy party seems to have worked?
– Is the personal data of citizens safe today? Has other personal data been leaked from the Home Office or other Ministries and into which hands has it fallen?
– Can the government ensure the security of citizens’ personal data and the rule of law?
Kehagia: We don’t know the depth of the scandal
The press representative of SYRIZA intervened on the radio station “to Kokkino” at noon on Friday.
Voula Kehagia stated the following: “I wanted to comment on what is unfolding in relation to the scandal that has as its starting point the Ministry of the Interior, but also the admission of Mr. Marinakis about the route of the e-mails and personal data of Greeks abroad, the which ended up in the hands of Ms. Asimakopoulou – possibly also other ND MEPs.
Everything that happened demonstrates and reveals that the Ministry of the Interior functions as a second-in-command of the ND, as a second-in-command of the ruling party.”
To the question of the journalist, Katerina Akrivopoulou, about whether SYRIZA is covered by the dismissal of the two secretaries of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the press representative replied: “No, of course. Because we don’t know what the depth of this scandal is. What Mr. Marinakis says and the government admits are only what the government, the Maximos Palace and the Ministry of the Interior say. We don’t know what else might be behind the email trail and the whole process.
When the government representative says that the e-mails left the YPES and ended up in the ND to continue the route to a ND MEP, this means that there was a communication channel of the ministry that has responsibility for the elections – and not only for the European Parliament – with the ND. What else can we assume? This case is definitely foul-smelling and scandalous and will concern us in the immediate future.”
