In the event of tree damage, a tool calculates the compensation to be paid

A surprising IT tool created in 2020 was adopted by Bagneux (Hauts-de-Seine) last February. Designed by the Copalme association, the architecture, town planning and environment council of Seine-et-Marne and Plante & Cité, it makes it possible to assign a monetary value to a tree. But also to ask for compensation in the event of damage, explains The Parisian.

To determine the value of a plant, we take into account in particular its age, the species, the price in the nursery, its dimensions and its ecological interest. Municipalities such as Rueil-Malmaison (Hauts-de-Seine), Maisons-Alfort (Val-de-Marne), Versailles (Yvelines) and Montgeron (Essonne) have also adopted this scale.

An average value of 8.50 euros

This is how among the 1,700 trees in Bagneux (Hauts-de-Seine), a 150-year-old weeping beech was estimated at 73,480 euros. Engraved names, initials or designs can cost their authors up to €11,000. On average, a tree is estimated at 8,500 euros. The head of the town’s green spaces department, Grégory Ouint, spoke of “an educational tool” which can also lead to repairs in the event of felling during development.
