In the US state of New York, which has been particularly hard hit by the corona pandemic, there are increasing signs of a trend reversal. The number of patients in hospitals is falling, Governor Andrew Cuomo said at his daily press conference.
“The health system has stabilized,” said Cuomo. “The fear that the health system would be overwhelmed has not materialized”.
18,335 people are therefore in clinics because of Covid-19 – fewer than a few days ago. Unlike previously feared, the hospitals have not yet been overwhelmed. This is mainly due to the huge efforts of everyone involved. The hospitals, for example, would have created more than 50 percent additional capacity for patients within just one month.
Cuomo warned, however, that the state was not yet out of the woods, it was still in a “monumental health crisis”. He instructed New Yorkers to wear a mask or other type of face shield in places of contact with other people. Meanwhile, the number of deaths per day remains constant at a high level. From Tuesday to Wednesday, 752 people died in the state with 19 million inhabitants – a total of more than 11,000.
Most of these dead come from the metropolis of the same name, New York City. So far, significantly more people may have died there than previously assumed. The big city on the US east coast added 3778 “probable” Covid-19 deaths to its statistics on the fatalities on Tuesday. This brings the total number of fatalities in New York City to more than 10,000 – but these probable deaths are not yet included in the state’s official statistics.
The additional numbers include, among other things, sick people who died in the emergency room, at home or in a care facility, but did not officially test positive for the virus. Mayor Bill de Blasio had reported a significant increase in the number of deaths of New York citizens in the apartments days ago. (dpa)
