‘Think of our residents’ was the message from the city council to the Roosendaal college on Thursday. The budget for 2025 was on the agenda. The parties came up with a large list of amendments and motions. All with topics that influence the future of the residents of the city and villages of the municipality. For example, the property tax increase, homeless shelter and the Leisure Park were on the agenda. But Sinterklaas presents, the village center of Nispen and the history of slavery were also discussed.
With regard to Real Estate Tax (OZB), the council decided to reduce the planned increase of ten percent. With this proposal from VLP Roosendaal and D66, the municipal council wants to limit the tax burden for residents. This decision reflects the council’s desire to keep the burden on citizens manageable, while the budget remains stable.
Strengthen the economy
At the initiative of the VVD, the planned Leisure Park was discussed. The party brought this topic to the table together with Vitaal Liberaal, VLP Roosendaal and PvdA. Roosendaal wants to position the Leisure Park as an attractive destination for recreation and tourism. The park should strengthen the economy and attract more visitors to the city. There is a lot of enthusiasm about this project, but also questions about the costs and expected long-term returns. The council emphasized that these types of investments are essential for the future, but that they must be carefully considered within the financial framework of the budget.
In addition, recognition of the history of slavery was on the agenda. Possibilities were discussed to highlight the history of Roosendaal in this respect and to stimulate awareness. GroenLinks, PvdA, VLP Roosendaal and D66 propose investing in initiatives that make this fraught past visible. For example, through educational projects and collaboration with local heritage organizations. The proposal received broad support. Almost the entire council sees this as an important signal of respect and recognition.
Sinterklaas motion
The annual Sinterklaas celebration was also discussed. The municipal council discussed BBR’s earlier motion. In her Sinterklaas motion, Selda Bozkurt wants presents for all children in Roosendaal. She proposes distributing the presents through a central point so that no child is missed. The motion was co-submitted on Thursday by VLP Roosendaal, D66, PvdA, Roosendaalse Lijst and the CDA. It resulted in a unanimous ‘yes’ vote.
More things will be adjusted in next year’s budget. The budget for the development of the village center of Nispen is increasing. And the tourist tax is also increasing. The budget includes room for research into the construction of a sustainable heating network at De Stok recreational park. And Roosendaal is considering its own homeless shelter and is therefore investing in research into the possibilities after this year.
With the budget for 2025, Roosendaal focuses on well-being and quality of life. The city council hopes to lay a solid foundation for a financially healthy and inclusive future for the residents of the city and its villages.
