Pursuant to an order of the Executive Director of the Food Safety Agency, a meeting of the Regional Epizootic Commission was held today, at which preventive measures to prevent the penetration and spread of plague among small ruminants were discussed and ordered.
The reason for the institutional meeting is the worsening epizootic situation in Romania and Greece regarding the plague of goats and sheep, according to the latest data, there are 37 outbreaks registered in Romania and 2 outbreaks in Greece.
Both in Burgas region and in Bulgaria, there are no registered cases of diseased small ruminants. Plague is dangerous for sheep and goats, but not for horses and cows.
In the Burgas region there are registered farms for elite animals, 240 of which are farms with 40,200 sheep and 12 farms with 962 goats. Experts agree that timely measures should be taken for prevention, as the disease has severe economic consequences.
According to the order, all mayors of municipalities in the Burgas region will urgently hold municipal epizootic commissions.
The holding of markets, exhibitions or other gatherings of small ruminants (sheep and goats) is prohibited.
Mixing of herds and unregulated movement of animals is prohibited. Livestock breeders must exercise strict control over farms and the means of transport they use to transport animals.
Plague is not dangerous for humans, but for small ruminants it is highly contagious, there is no treatment, the outcome is mostly fatal for animals.
