Hip hop is said to have originated in the Bronx in New York. A new museum is to honor this. Now the topping-out ceremony has been celebrated.

The Hip-Hop Museum in New York is one big step closer to opening. The topping-out ceremony for the building in the Bronx district, which will house the museum and around 550 apartments, was held on Wednesday.

“This is another milestone for hip-hop,” director Rocky Bucano said at the ceremony. The opening of the museum is currently planned for 2024. The foundation stone for the building was laid just last year – with stars such as Nas, LL Cool J and Grandmaster Flash. The construction of the exhibition hall cost around 80 million dollars (about 75 million euros).

Hip-hop is said to have originated in the Bronx in the 1970s, when musicians like DJ Kool Herc didn’t play the complete songs on their records, but only the instrumental parts between the vocals – and then there was rap. Today, hip hop in all its forms is one of the most widespread styles of music. “The hip-hop museum belongs here in the Bronx,” said former borough president Ruben Diaz, “if you love hip-hop, then this must be a dream come true.”
