The satisfaction of receiving the anticovid vaccine flooded the social networks of photos of people rolled up at the time of puncture. But in the Brazilian city of Joinville, those who dare to take a portrait appear with low pants.

Adults in this municipality of Santa Catarina (south) have received the covid-19 vaccine in the upper part of the buttock since the beginning of the campaign in January, but a photo of a neighbor receiving a dose made this practice viral that the authority local health justified by having fewer adverse reactions.

“For me the place does not matter, the important thing is to get vaccinated. They already applied the first one to the gluteal area and I never had anything,” Claudemir Da Silva, a 60-year-old painter who received the second dose on Friday morning, told AFP anticovid and walked without discomfort.

Jean Rodrigues, Secretary of Health of Joinville, explained the reason for this alternative: “Because it is an intramuscular application, the ventrogluteal area was chosen, which is precisely where there are fewer adverse reactions to the application,” he explained in a video published by the municipality in which it is jokingly suggested to take the selfie later, with the certificate.

But this administration of the vaccine in the upper lateral region of the gluteus or in the arm is not related to the possible effects of the immunizer itself, introduced in both cases into the muscle tissue to achieve rapid absorption.

In Joinville, with some 600,000 inhabitants, you don’t have to raise your sleeve to receive the flu vaccine, as is usually the case in other places. “The health protocol indicates that all intramuscular vaccines be applied as a priority in that lower area,” Thiago Boeing, a spokesman for the municipal government, told AFP.

The area offers better muscle thickness, is free of nerves and blood vessels, and covered in a thinner layer of fat, details a document from the local health ministry.

“It is more comfortable, it gives less pain and afterwards the side effects of redness, discomfort and swelling are also less,” added Boeing.

– “I did not feel anything” –

Although there is not much room for modesty in this country where a lot of skin is exposed, in Joinville those who prefer it can receive the injection in the arm, in tune with the rest of Brazil and the world.

But there is hardly anyone who objects to the low puncture, says the city spokesman.

Neither did Marli Schneider Helmert, who “in no way” felt exposed by receiving this alternative vaccination. “I didn’t feel anything (…) They applied it to my mother’s arm and I couldn’t even lift it,” he told AFP.

Whether up or down, 357,679 inhabitants of Joinville received first doses and 150,667 have already been fully vaccinated, around 60% and 25% of the total, according to official records.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the city has accumulated 107,664 infections and 1,735 deaths.

This Friday the municipality opened the registration for adolescents between 12 and 17 years old, a very active age group on social networks.
