In “The Afterparty”, each episode is a new genre | MovieZine

Phil Lord and Chris Miller are back with a murder mystery, a comedy series, a thriller – or maybe a musical?

Fun grip on a classic whodunnit – in the new Apple series “The Afterparty”, each episode is a new genre. The plot takes place at a high school reunion where the highlight of the party, the celebrity Xavier (Dave Franco) is found murdered. The police have several suspects to interrogate, and each person is allowed to retell the evening’s events from their own angle – inspired by popular film genres and stylistic devices.

In the first trailer, we see that the comedy bit is permeated by most things, but there is also room for thriller and horror, black and white noir, romance and possibly some musical numbers.

Behind the series are Chris Miller and Phil Lord, the duo known for films such as “21 Jump Street” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”. They have filled the cast with funny names like Tiffany Haddish, Ike Barinholtz and Ben Schwartz.

Given how popular “Only Murders in the Building” (Disney +) became earlier this year, it’s not entirely unthinkable that “The Afterparty” could find a large audience that is hungry for more entertaining murder mysteries.

The first season of the series consists of eight episodes and premieres on January 28 on Apple TV +. On the premiere day, three episodes will be available, and the rest will be released every Friday.
