In Texas, parents of transgender minors targeted by legal investigations

LGBTQ – In Texas, the series of anti-LGBT attacks continues. Indeed, the recent and controversial directive from the Governor Greg Abbot experiences its first turmoil. A conservative state court suspended on Wednesday March 2 an investigation targeting the parents of a transgender teenager, carried out in application of this directive.

This last equates certain “sex change” procedures for minors with criminally reprehensible “ill-treatment”. Assisted by the human rights organization ACLU, teenage girl’s family had filed a complaint to block the investigation, and more broadly to invalidate the directive.

A court in Travis County, Texasdecided to suspend the actions against the parents, the judge considering that the plaintiffs would otherwise suffer “irreparable damage”.

A text that “traumatized” their daughter

Among the gender change procedures cited by the directive, there are surgical operations but also hormonal treatments, such as puberty blockers which slow down the changes in the body during adolescence. The text also calls on state services to “investigate the parents of children subjected to these abusive procedures”.

According to the complaint from the family under investigation, this text has “traumatized” their daughter who fears being separated from her parents or being deprived of “medical treatment which has allowed her to flourish”. The mother of the transgender teenager had been suspended by her employer – Texas Family Services – and was visited by an inspector who was trying to find out if her 16-year-old daughter “was not transitioning from male to female,” according to the court document.

The ACLU stresses that the court’s decision only applies to this case, but specifies that a hearing is scheduled for March 11 to decide on the texts covered by the complaint.

Until I leave Texas

The American president, for his part, denounced a “cynical and dangerous campaign which targets transgender children and their parents” in a press release on March 2. “These actions terrify many families, in Texas and beyond,” Joe Biden continued, “and they need to stop.”

In Texas, access to toilets or school sports for trans people is the subject of heated debate. Violet, a mother, recently testified to the American media CNN leave texas for california in order to protect her trans daughter. “The general feeling [au Texas] is the permanent fear […] It’s just time for us to leave and I want to be somewhere where there are really laws that protect it instead of trying to erase it,” she confides of her daughter.
