During the training from the Winterthur Cantonal Hospital, the process is practiced with the new incubator. The Winterthur Cantonal Hospital is the first hospital in the world to use this incubator. The special feature: babies up to the age of six months can be transported and a mobile ventilator enables rescue even in difficult places without interrupting ventilation. The incubation device can also be transported by ambulance or Rega.
Every year 160 to 180 babies are moved with the incubation machine, explains Markus Huggler, head of the Winterthur ambulance service. These are not only outpatient cases, but also transports from hospital to hospital, as the KSW is one of the few hospitals with a department for neonatology. “We are responsible for the transport and the technical part, the neonatology for the medical part,” he told RADIO TOP.
“In terms of technology, we have the same standard as we have in the hospital,” says Lukas Hegi, chief physician at the Clinic for Neonatology in Winterthur, about the new incubator.
