The Brandenburg Barometer is a non-representative survey by the Märkische Allgemeine Zeitung, the Märkische Oderzeitung and the Lausitzer Rundschau. It is intended to show how the people of Brandenburg are doing and what concerns them. A total of over 15,000 people were surveyed, and multiple answers were possible.

High average age among survey participants from Teltow-Fläming

More than 500 60- to 69-year-olds from the Teltow-Fläming district took part in the survey; they make up the largest group, 35.1 percent of those surveyed. Around a fifth of the participants were between 50 and 59 years old, and 18.6 percent were between 70 and 79 years old.

Brandenburg Barometer: Commitment yes, but not necessarily political

Most respondents are involved in neighborhood assistance (87.3 percent), in a sports club (84.1 percent) or in city or village festivals (81.3 percent) or could imagine doing so.

At the bottom of the list of priorities were participation in citizens’ or local councils, membership in the volunteer fire brigade or the Federal Agency for Technical Relief, and refugee aid. Nevertheless, a good three quarters of those surveyed said that they were active in these areas or could at least imagine doing so.

About half of the participants are not politically active (52.5 percent). For most respondents, this is because they do not feel like they belong to any group (41.6 percent) or do not have the time (34.5 percent). 18.9 percent are of the opinion that they cannot change anything anyway.

Half of the participants would support more investment in regional public transport, while a good quarter consider the expansion and renovation of roads and bridges and investment in cycle paths to be important.

But there are other demands: 76 percent of participants believe that there is too little affordable housing. In addition, a good half are of the opinion that there are too few cultural and gastronomic offerings.

Problems with the catering offer: This is what the tourism association says

Daniel Menzel, managing director of the Fläming Tourism Association, is also aware of the problem of the limited catering options. He sees the cause in the lack of staff:

“The loss of staff during the pandemic has exacerbated the problem that already existed. The gap between supply and demand is widening dangerously. We can only be successful as a tourist region if we have the right staff.”

According to Menzel, this could have far-reaching consequences: “I see a risk for our region that the important tourism development work carried out by many committed entrepreneurs since reunification could suffer lasting damage.”

However, a solution already exists. According to Menzel, there will soon be an employer brand for the entire region, the introduction of which is currently being prepared by the tourism association together with the districts of Teltow-Fläming and Potsdam-Mittelmark, the Potsdam Chamber of Industry and Commerce and tourism companies in Fläming. This is intended to make the job market more attractive and attract staff.
