The farewell ceremony for Magufuli took place a week ago on Sunday, March 21, at the stadium in the Tanzanian capital Dar es Salaam. As explained in the local police, the stampede occurred due to the fact that a large number of people who wanted to try to get into the stadium through unofficial entrances. As a result, 45 people died, another 37 were injured.
“These people were not criminals. They went to the stadium to express their love for their departed leader, but due to the sheer number of people, some became impatient and chose to use unofficial entry points, and that’s how the problem arose,” police said.
Law enforcement officials noted that all 37 people injured in the stampede feel better and were discharged from hospitals.
Initially, only five were reported killed in the stampede.
