Hundreds of troops will be stationed in Sydney, Australia, to help law enforcement monitor compliance with the quarantine measures imposed due to the spread of Covid-19. However, many people question the need to involve the army in controlling the situation.
The outbreak of the delta virus, which began in Australia in June, has so far caused nearly 3,000 infections and nine deaths. In Sydney, with a population of more than five million, 170 new infections were registered on Friday.
Despite a five-week quarantine regime, infection rates in Australia’s largest city continue to rise.
The quarantine regime, which will run until at least August 28, prohibits people from leaving home for irrelevant reasons. Residents must not move more than 10 km from their home.
Australian Defense Forces soldiers are expected to be trained this weekend before patrolling city streets on Monday. They will join the police to ensure that people follow the rules.
State Police Secretary David Eliot said the involvement of the army would help, as a small proportion of Sydney’s population believed that “the rules do not apply to them”.
However, the information provided by health officials indicates that the coronavirus is currently spreading mainly without violating quarantine restrictions, ie during authorized movements.
In Australia, about 17% of the population has been vaccinated against Covid-19, one of the lowest rates among developed countries.
