Sudan’s largest pro-democracy group, the Sudanese Association of Professionals, reported that mobile communications in the country were also disrupted. The Sudanese Ministry of Information reported that bridges and roads leading to Khartoum had been blocked by army forces.

Sudan’s largest political party, Umma, said the coup had begun and called on people to protest. A similar call has been issued by the Sudan Professional Association.

An army uprising would be a huge step backwards for Sudan, which is in transition to democracy.

Sudan was ruled by an iron fist by President Omar al-Bashir for 30 years, until his army overthrew his regime in 2019 after mass protests. Civilians and the army then formed a joint transitional administration, which received international support.

However, tensions between the country’s political and military leaders have increased in Sudan in recent weeks.

The failed coup attempt in September again split the country between conservative Islamists seeking a military government and those who overthrew Bashir in mass protests. In recent days, both camps have organized demonstrations.

The Sudanese Ministry of Information said the whereabouts of the army’s detained officials were unknown. The ministry did not reveal which officials were detained. It is not known whether Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok is among those detained.
