Presidents of Russia and Ukraine Vladimir Putin and Vladimir Zelensky agreed to accept the mission of African leaders to peacefully resolve the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. This was announced by the President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa following a telephone conversation with both leaders, CGTN Europe reports.
“This mission has been discussed for many months. <...> A group of African leaders insisted that it was important for Africa, and it was for a great cause. I spoke to the leaders of the countries [Украины и России]which I mentioned, and we decided to start this process, ”Ramaphosa emphasized.
According to him, in addition to South Africa, the presidents of Zambia, Senegal, Congo, Uganda and Egypt are taking part in the initiative. He added that UN Secretary General António Guterres and the African Union office have already been informed about this mission.
The Kremlin press service reported on a telephone conversation between Putin and Ramaphosa, which took place on the initiative of the South African side, on May 12. It was noted that Putin supported the idea expressed by the South African leader that a group of African leaders should participate in the discussion of the prospects for resolving the conflict.
