It got colder in Eastern Norway on Tuesday afternoon and evening, and the Meteorological Institute reports that there may be a risk of slippery roads in Eastern Norway. But the cold air won’t last long, according to Martin Granerød, a meteorologist at the Meteorological Institute.
– Temperatures will eventually rise to +, so most of what falls in the lower-lying areas and along the coast of Eastern Norway will be rain, Granerød says.
– This is crazy
West wind
A little higher up in the mountains, it will preferably be snow or sleet.
– In southern Norway, everything falls as rain. If not, we have posted a danger warning for the southern and inland parts of Rogaland. We expect strong winds late Tuesday evening and early night, with gusts of 27 to 30 meters per second, says Granerød and continues:
– Wind gusts are a local phenomenon, but in some places they become violent. The wind direction is from the southeast, so it will be the more southern and inland parts of Rogaland that feel the wind the most.
But other places in Norway will also experience strong winds in the next 24 hours. Like the Skagerak coast:
– There will be wind from Lindesnes and along the coast towards the Swedish border. But here the wind picks up in the late evening and at night. Even in the most northerly exposed places, in western Norway and in Trøndelag, there will be severe to strong gales in the next 24 hours, says the meteorologist.
Snowflake in the mountains
Meteorologists have also raised a warning about snowdrifts in the mountains due to strong winds and snow.
– It will still be windy in the north. Weak to strong storm in exposed places. There has been some wind in Finnmark in the last 24 hours and there is still a strong gale in the east. But – there will be some reduction beyond tomorrow, says Granerød.
Windy weather is quite common in the winter months, according to the meteorologist.
– The wind was stronger and it was calmer. Now we’re somewhere in between, she says.
Possible snow in Oslo
The rain that will arrive in eastern and southern Norway overnight through Wednesday will ease.
– From tomorrow, people in the east and south will be able to experience the change in cloud cover and persistent weather into the weekend. Then the weather will be slightly cooler again and there may be snow in both the higher and lower areas towards the weekend, says Granerød.
In Western Norway it will be mild and rainy on Wednesday and Thursday.
Even there, it might get a little colder towards the weekend, but mostly the weather stays, says the meteorologist.
Møre, Romsdal and Trøndelag will also experience persistent weather over the next few days.
– In Nordland, people have to expect periods of rain or sleet from time to time, and snow in the mountains. In Troms and Finnmark, the temperature is low enough that what is falling is snow, he concludes.
