Over the years, cable reception has declined.
The regulatory authority announced that in Slovakia people receive the television service most often via satellite. The total number of people with TV is growing.
“At the end of 2020, approximately 1.82 million users watched television programs through the TV retransmission service, which represents a year-on-year increase of approximately 20,000 users,” the state office said.
This follows from the contracts concluded with the service provider and the number of active connections. The data were provided to the office directly by TV providers.
Composition by individual technologies at the end of 2020:
- satellite – 866 thousand clients (at the end of 2014 there were more than a million of them)
- IPTV – a total of 543 thousand subscribers (at the end of 2014 there were only 244 thousand of them)
- cable TV – a total of 355 thousand customers, of which 213 thousand were digital (DVB-C). Since 2014, their number has decreased by 115,000, and reception via digital cable has increased by 4,000.
Other forms of reception via mobile network, MMDS or paid DVB-T are also available. A total of 194 entities provided TV services in our country.
The data show that the largest players in our country were Canal + (Skylink and freeSAT), Telekom, Digi Slovakia, UPC and Orange.
If we look, for example, at the ranking of the largest IPTV players, the first place belongs to Telekom, followed by Orange and the number three on the market is Antik.
