In total, 322,542 MWh of electricity was generated in Latvia in September, which is almost twice as much as in August, Latvia’s electricity consumption was 588,476 MWh, as a result of which 54.8% of consumption was covered by local energy sources, which is an improvement of 26.9 percentage points compared to August. .
In September, compared to August, electricity generation at Daugava HPPs increased slightly – by 13%, which is 27% less than in September 2020, the volume of small cogeneration plants decreased by 11%, but the contribution of small HPPs to the total electricity balance increased by 30%. . Changes in the rest of the production structure did not significantly affect Latvia’s electricity generation balance.
It has already been reported that in September, for the first time since the opening of the electricity market, the average monthly price was in the triple digits, reaching 123.50 euros per megawatt hour, which is 41.4% more than in August, but compared to September 2020 times higher.
The increase in prices in Latvia is mainly due to the following reasons: significantly increased gas and CO2 quota prices, lower filling of water reservoirs in Norway, lower development of wind farms, as a result of which the exchange price was determined by energy sources with a higher offered price. Temporary price increases on some days in the Baltics were also caused by the unavailability of interconnections due to maintenance work.
In September, the price of electricity fell below the average monthly price in the hours when the development of wind power plants increased in the Baltics: the price of electricity decreased to 85.72 EUR / MWh.
