At the end of January, the painting of Saint Andrew of the church of Saulges, registered since the end of 2020 as a Historic Monument, went to the curator in Saint-Denis-d’Anjou for restoration.
“This oil painting by Duverger, dated 1770, has remained in its original condition. It has never been restored, but that’s not a problem”, indicates Fanny Chauvet, curator and restorer of paintings, in charge of the whiteboard.
This painting, which suffered from humidity, will undergo a restoration in order to perpetuate the work. During the removal, the curator applied a protective layer with hemp paper and cellulose glue to prevent any loss of material.
The original varnish will be removed. The microcracks will be repaired, then a final varnish will be applied. “The gaps will be masticated and reinstated in an illusionist way”, specifies Fanny Chauvet.
Amount of rehabilitation: € 7,335
The frame of the painting is also left for the restoration. It is Marie-Line Brunet of the Atelier de Dorure in Saint-Berthevin who is in charge.
The nature of the restoration was chosen according to the location of the exhibition. Two coats of paint will be applied and the peripheral moldings will be underlined by the installation of gold leaves.
The cost of this rehabilitation amounts to € 7,335 excluding tax, including € 5,458 of subsidies from the Drac (Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs) and CD53 (departmental council).
