Russia has the fourth highest number of infections and deaths after the United States, India and Brazil.

However, Russia’s official pandemic statistics have been much criticized, especially the official death toll from Covid-19.

Rosstat, released on Friday night, shows a much gloomier picture of the pandemic in Russia than government figures show that 23,349 people died of Covid-19 in July. Only deaths with Covid-19 as the leading cause of death at autopsy are included in government figures.

Rosstat further defines the death of Covid-19 and, according to official data, 50,421 people died of coronavirus disease in Russia in July.

In addition, according to Rosstat, more than 350,000 people died in Covid-19 during the pandemic in Russia, while government figures show that the death toll is just over 180,000.

There is great skepticism about vaccination in Russian society. 55% of the population in Russia do not plan to be vaccinated, according to a survey published this month by Russia’s largest independent sociological research company Levada Center.

Partial compulsory vaccination against Covid-19 has been introduced in Moscow and several regions of Russia, and Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly called for people to be vaccinated.

Three domestic Covid-19 vaccines are available in Russia, but no vaccine developed in the West.

Currently, only about 36 million of the 146 million people in Russia are fully vaccinated, according to the Gogov website, which tracks data on Covid-19 from the regions.
