In Russia, in the city of Nizhny Novgorod, Irina Slavina, editor-in-chief of the local web publication Koza.Press, set herself on fire at the headquarters of the Ministry of the Interior on Friday.
She died of her injuries. Earlier on Friday, she left a post on Facebook: “Please blame the Russian Federation for my death.”
On Thursday, law enforcement agencies conducted a search of Slavin’s apartment in connection with a criminal case against the Kremlin critic Mikhail Khodorkovsky’s Open Russia movement, which has been declared an undesirable organization in Russia.
“I collected what I found – all the flash drives, my laptop, my daughter’s laptop, the phones – not only my, but also my husband’s, a pile of notebooks, which I wrote during press conferences. I have been left without the means of production, ”said Slavina herself after the search.
In the summer of 2019, the court found Slavina guilty of participating in an undesirable organization for posting her own news about Open Russia lectures on the Internet. She was then fined 5,000 rubles.
On Friday, people gathered in Nizhny Novgorod near the site of Slavin’s death to commemorate him and lay flowers.
Slavina’s website published investigations into corruption and articles on the opposition.
