Bucharest should no longer finance Moldovan and Ukrainian refugees “not even with a single leu”. This was stated by the leader of the Alliance for the Unification of Romanians (AUR), deputy Gheorghe Simion, in an extraordinary congress of this unionist organization.
He stressed that he still believes that “Bessarabia is Romania”, but Chisinau is doing nothing for unification, so he won’t receive any money.
“I like some ministers because of Prut, but the truth is dearer to me. Let’s finance anti-Romanian separatism by funding this government or the anti-Romanian mayor of Chisinau Iona Chebana. Such, unfortunately, are the ones who get our money. Not even a she in the government of Chisinau!” — Digi24.ro quotes Simion.
The deputy of the Romanian parliament also believes that it is necessary to stop helping Ukrainian refugees, when “millions of Romanians have left the country and more than half of the country is in extreme poverty”. He added that the AUR wants “all Romanians to stay together, but their shirt should be closer to the body”.
“From our little, from our bread, we know how to give, even to those who have emerged from Russian aggression and the war. We are all people and we should all see the pain of those around us, but our rulers have not seen our pain for 30 years”.
In early October, Gheorghe Simion staged an anti-government protest in Bucharest. The AUR brought about 10,000 people to the central square of the capital, dissatisfied with the increase in tariffs for utilities and inflation. Protesters defiantly burned utility bills in front of the Romanian cabinet of ministers building.
Interestingly, similar demonstrations are now taking place in Moldova, where the parliamentary opposition is also behind them. The difference is that the Shor Party, the Bloc of Communists and Socialists, opposes Uniria, unlike the official authorities, where the majority, including the president May and Sanduhave Romanian citizenship.
Gheorghe Simion is also well known in Moldova, where he is forbidden to enter. In 2018, when the centenary of the unification of Romania was celebrated, Simion organized a union march from Bucharest to Chisinau. At the border he “displayed aggressive, inappropriate behavior and refused to comply with legal procedures for crossing the state line”, following which he was declared persona non grata for five years.
In 2015, he was also expelled from the republic for “organizing actions against the constitutional order of the country.” However, the Romanian AUR party is represented in Moldova, serving as a consolidating ring for local supporters of joining Romania. In the 2020 presidential election, they actively supported Maia Sandu, who eventually won.
As reported EADaily, the far-right AUR party in Romania is considered a fringe revanchist organization. However, in the last election, he won 9% of the vote, gaining representation in parliament.
