The Commission examined the epidemiological situation in Riga in the field of education and welfare, the control of Covid-19 restrictions and measures to reduce the spread of the virus in public transport.
It has been decided that “Rīgas satiksme” and Riga Municipal Police will provide additional controls to ensure the use of masks in public transport.
According to the rules, the mask must be used directly, and it will not be possible to align with a scarf or other mouth and nose cover. This is an important tool for limiting the spread of Covid-19 and passengers will be able to disembark for non-compliance with it, stressed the Mayor of Riga Mārtiņš Staķis.
“I can appeal again and call on people to be understanding. Experts from the Center for Disease Prevention and Control indicated that the largest outbreaks of Covid-19 were related to public transport. So the use of masks in public transport is critical. We do this not because someone tells us to, but because it is important to ensure, first and foremost, that schooling takes place in person. In fact, if you do not use the mask on public transport, you will greatly jeopardize the face-to-face learning process in schools. Therefore, please be responsible and call on your peers to comply with this requirement, ”said Staķis.
“Of course, we will also have additional controls on public transport. Those who can, but do not want to use the mask in public transport, must take into account that these passengers can be disembarked from public transport, ”warned the Mayor of Riga.
However, there are no plans to change the organization of traffic flow yet.
Stakis added that the amount of masks and disinfectants at the disposal of Riga municipal structures is sufficient.
The Welfare Department of the Riga City Council will provide masks for the poorest groups in society who cannot afford to buy them.
