Extermination of blood ‘against the allocation of merit’
As resignation protests spread, people will be cornered.
Military: “We will create a transitional government”
A skit in which Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina (76, pictured), who has been receiving calls for her resignation from young people, announced her intention to step down on the 5th (local time) and fled abroad. On this day, the largest daily newspaper in Bangladesh, Protom Allo, reported that Prime Minister Hasina, who had brutally attacked citizens, including university students, protesting against the policy of the civil service for the children of independence patriots by moving the army, was evacuated abroad using a military helicopter that day. CNN News 18 from nearby India also reported, “Prime Minister Hasina left her official residence in the capital Dhaka and was evacuated to a safe place.
Citing a close associate of Prime Minister Hasina, AFP said, “Prime Minister Hasina wanted to record her speech to the nation, but there was no opportunity.”
In Bangladesh, protests against the government have continued since the 16th of last month. When the government pursued a policy of allocating 30% of public positions to the children of independence activists, protests began, led by college students demanding fair hiring.
In response, Prime Minister Hasina responded with a hard line rather than compromise. The Bangladesh government sent in the military as well as the police. The military and the police opened fire on citizens. According to Bangladesh police, more than 300 citizens have died since the 5th. The number of casualties is estimated to be in the thousands.
Due to excessive restrictions, the protests spread across the country. Not only students but also ordinary citizens took to the streets. The demands of the activists for Prime Minister Hasina to resign rather than abolish the policy expanded.
This was Prime Minister Hasina’s fifth term as Prime Minister. She is the eldest daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the first president of Bangladesh and considered the ‘founding father’, and she was respected for her struggle against dictatorship.
After serving time in prison, he came to power by winning the general election in 1996, and served as prime minister until July 2001. After that, he was ousted from office due to mis- economic administration and corruption, but he won again in the 2008 general election and became prime minister from January 2009.
AFP said that the Chief of Staff of the Army Gen. Wacker Woods Zaman that the military would create a transitional government in a speech on local national TV that day. In 2007, as unrest spread on a large scale, the Bangladeshi military declared a state of emergency and established a military-backed transitional government for two years.
