In Prague, there was a decline in mining in the Karviná region. It starts on March 1

The management of the region negotiated that an analysis would be created, which would address the impact of the suppression of hard coal mining on the entire region. In addition to the region and ministries, the mining company OKD will also participate in the analysis.

“The year 2021 will thus become a major milestone for the entire Moravian-Silesian Region. The slowdown in mining will affect the economic performance of supply companies, employment, the security of the central heat supply for the region’s inhabitants and the supply of coking coal for the needs of the steel industry and, consequently, mechanical engineering, “said the Moravian-Silesian governor.

He added that he therefore considered it necessary for the region to enter the process with clear requirements and proposals that would help mitigate these negative impacts.

According to the Deputy Governor of Moravia-Silesia, Jakub Unucka (ODS), the region will need coal at least until 2030. Mainly for central heating of households and also for steel production. “Therefore, in our opinion, the accelerated slowdown in hard coal mining is very risky. That’s why we are looking for ways to manage the whole situation so that as few people and companies as possible suffer, “Unucka responded.

OKD is the only producer of hard coal in the Czech Republic. In addition to the ČSM-Sever and ČSM-Jih mines, mines are also mined in the Karviná region, as well as in the Darkov mine and the ČSA mine. The company employs around 8,000 people in the mines. OKD is owned by the state through Prisko. The government is now preparing to discuss the transfer of OKD’s assets to the state-owned company DIAMO in connection with the decline in mining in all mines except the ČSM mine.
