ENTERTAINMENT – Attention those nostalgic for the 2000s, Pop stars is back. After having brought out talents like Matt Pokora, L5 and Sheryfa Luna, the cult talent show created by M6 is back for a modernized version on Prime Video. The new season arrives on the streaming platform this Thursday, September 12, with four first episodes. The second part will be available on September 19.
The principle of the show remains the same: to find future stars to form a group. To sniff out the members of the future musical trio or quartet, Amazon Prime Video brought together the singer Louane, herself from a talent show (The Voice), Eddy de Pretto, iconic singer of French pop, and Alonzo, the Marseille rapper from Psy 4 de la Rime.
For the jury as well as for the hundred or so pre-selected candidates, the adventure Pop stars starts with the test of « hangar ». In episode 1 of the show, that The HuffPost was able to see a preview, the singers pass in line of 5 in front of the judges in a huge hangar lit by projectors.
Candidates whose performance convinces the jury will receive a pass for the next stage of singing and dancing. At the end of the day, there will only be about thirty left to continue the adventure.
Rather SZA or Christophe?
For this first round of auditions, they must each take turns singing a piece a cappella. But not just any. The potential future pop stars had to choose from a list of about ten songs, according to information from the HuffPost. It is therefore not surprising that the same refrains are heard throughout the first episode.
And some titles on the list have been more successful than others. By our count, Kill Bill by American singer SZA is sung no less than four times in the first episode, as is The Blue WordsChristophe’s hit written by Jean-Michel Jarre. Another French variety title from the 70s-80s is heard three times: Sunburn by Richard Cocciante.
Three other candidates chose the difficulty with Listen of Beyoncé, who is “impossible to sing” according to Louane. The song 40 % By Aya Nakamura and Indelible d’Yseult were each performed by three candidates kept in the editing. Three others revisited the hit in their own way Disappointment of the star Rosalía, but in Spanish.
Booba (My Color) and Harry Styles (As it was) were also clearly part of the list proposed to the candidates. However, some took liberties. A young rapper asked the judges if he could perform one of his own texts.
And after being given a second chance to prove himself a cappellaanother candidate went all out on a song by Eddy de Pretto, facing the singer and author himself. A big risk that paid off, or not. Episode 2 will tell.
