In Poland, the interactive exhibition «Riga fabric. Articles of the era »/ Article

As explained in the museum, the textile factory “Rīgas audums” established in 1925 by the entrepreneur Roberts Hiršs (1895–1972) quickly became the leading fashion brand in the interwar period in Latvia. The factory continued to weave and print silk, semi-silk and synthetic fiber materials both under the Ministry of Light Industry of the Latvian SSR and after the restoration of Latvia’s independence. In the 76 years of its existence, thousands of fabric samples have been made, the patterns of which have left their mark on the fashion of the era, technological and industrial development, creative search and experimentation of artists.

In 2009, the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design received a gift from a long-term employee of “Rīgas auduma”, artist Ieva Zaļkalne – 14 sample albums – unique copies of Latvian industrial design, which document fabric prints in the period from 1930 to 1990. At least part of the lost information about the factory’s creative activity went to the museum to be preserved, researched and publicly exhibited. However, given the fragility of textiles and paper, exhibiting albums is very problematic.

“As one of the priorities of the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design is to make the museum’s collection available to the public, new forms of communication were sought,” the museum said. In cooperation with the virtual reality company “Vividly” DMDM has created the project “Riga fabric. Articles of the Age ”, which combines scientific research and the digitization of archival materials, offering an interactive experience. Combining modern technology with the analog world provides documentary evidence for the future. The exposition, created on the basis of the latest advanced technologies, as well as its continuation in a remote – digital – environment, is an opportunity to explore the as yet undiscovered 30s-80s of the 20th century. years of industrial design heritage in Latvia. ”

Even before the premiere in Riga, at the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design, the exhibition “Riga fabric. Articles of the Age ”will be shown in Białystok, a city that until recently was the largest center of the textile industry in Poland. Its exhibition at the Białystok Puppet Theater Gallery is organized by the Department of Architecture of the Białystok Technical University and the Embassy of the Republic of Latvia in Poland. The interactive project has been created with the support of the State Cultural Capital Fund.
