In Piraeus: Greek hooligans seriously injure a police officer

During serious riots between hooligans and the police in Piraeus late on Thursday evening, a Greek police officer was hit by a flare and seriously injured.

According to the hospital in the suburb of Nikaia, the 31-year-old’s life was in danger on Friday.

The riots occurred around a sports hall during the top volleyball match between Olympiacos Piraeus and Panathinaikos Athens.

The police arrested more than 400 rioters and tried to identify the perpetrators, Greek Radio (ERT) reported on Friday. The game was canceled. The supporters of the two big clubs are enemies.

No football after threats

The highest Greek football league, the Superliga, is also shaken by riots by hooligans. Because strangers threatened two referees earlier this week, the Association of Referees decided not to appoint any referees for the upcoming matchday this weekend.

The Superliga then canceled the match day.
