In pictures: Two minutes of complete darkness from Antarctic eclipse

It last happened in Antarctica in 2003, and in the Netherlands in 1715: a total solar eclipse. The sun was completely eclipsed by the moon for just under two minutes this morning on the uninhabited continent. Some tourists and scientists have watched the natural phenomenon.

The “eclipse tourists” stayed at Union Glacier camp, the only place where tourists can stay overnight during the summer season (October through March). The scientists watched the eclipse from several research stations.
