Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Fitr, Bayram
Muslims today celebrate the end of Ramadan, a holy month of fasting from sunrise to sunset. The common term for the festival is the Arabic Eid al-Fitr. This literally means ‘the feast of breaking the fast’. To congratulate each other on the end of the fasting month, the words ‘Eid Mubarak’, translated: ‘Have a blessed celebration’ are often used.
In the Netherlands and Belgium, the name Suikerfeest is also used to indicate the celebration. This term refers to the delicacies eaten during the feast. The word is derived from a Turkish name for the feast: Seker Bayramı (‘candy feast’). This term is said to be a distortion of the words Sükür Bayramı, useful in Ottoman times, meaning ‘feast of gratitude’.
