BVRestrained, sober yet warm and emotional, Eddy and Christa Planckaert, together with their children and grandchildren, said goodbye to Mémé Clara. “If heaven exists, I really don’t know why you wouldn’t be allowed there, there wasn’t an ounce of evil in you,” said a touched Francesco.

She had a difficult life as a young widow, but later also a wonderful life, judging by the moving compilation of images of Mémé Clara, invariably surrounded by her beloved children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. One shed a tear, the other couldn’t suppress a smile. It was a highlight during the sober funeral service of Clara Brusseel, as she was officially called. In the packed church of Meigem, right opposite the house where she lived most of her life, the Planckaerts said goodbye to her yesterday. A camera crew was also present, because the funeral will of course be shown in the coming season of ‘De Planckaerts’.

Last clear conversation

Eddy and Christa saw with emotion how their children and grandchildren paid tribute to their deceased (great) grandmother with warm words. “I’m grateful we had a clear conversation recently, you already realized that these were your last days,” said a touched Francesco as Stephanie and Junior couldn’t hold back their tears any longer. Clara was still struggling with a corona infection in November, but after that she suffered from bronchitis and pneumonia and she deteriorated visibly.

“My mind said this moment would come, but I’d rather not think about it,” Stephanie sobbed. “You always gave advice without exaggerated wisdom, and in the meantime we got the giggles countless times. I am so grateful you were my grandmother. We were together, we are together, we stay together.” Words that we also read on the prayer card.

We love you so much

Magali and Christopher also had a hard time speaking next to the altar, although the whole family still smiled when Iluna sang ‘Que sera sera’ and ‘La vie en rose’. Her voice stopped at the end. “We love you so much”, she could just say with a kiss towards her great-grandmother’s urn.

After the service, all present offered their condolences to the family. Mémé Clara would have turned 96 in September.
