The acting president, Karin Herrera, reported this Thursday that students in the public and private sectors in Suchitepéquez will return to in-person classes next week.
“Thanks to the work of the Ministry of Health, the decision was made to return to classes next week for the boys and girls in Suchitepéquez,” said the official during a supervision she carried out at the National Hospital of Mazatenango. .
This week, the Ministry of Health authorized the Ministry of Education (Mineduc) to resume classes in Suchitepéquez, given the reduction in cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome detected since the end of last year.

Teacher training
During a press conference, Herrera said that currently the Health portfolio provides training to teachers for their return to the classroom. These were taught by professionals from the health portfolio at the Méndez Montenegro Institute.
“The Ministry of Health is training teachers, we had the opportunity to visit them at this school and with this we hope for a safe return to classes,†stated the vice-governor.

He highlighted that the objective of these trainings is that the return to the classrooms is with strict control of security measures issued by the Ministry of Health.
On Wednesday, the head of the Health Ministry, Oscar Cordón, reported that the Ministry of Education was notified to resume in-person classes in Suchitepéquez, always taking sanitary measures.
“The minister was notified that classes can resume and that the prevention part in food preparation must be reinforced, taking into consideration that there are canteens in schools,†stated the official.
The 2024 school year began in the private sector in January and in the public sector on February 19, at the national level. However, there was a suspension of classes locally due to cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome.
