It is only the second time in its history that theFrench Blood Establishment (EFS) throw a second urgent call to donation in less than six months. After having launched a first in February, the establishment was forced to issue a second at the end of June 2022. In Ile-de-France in particular, departures on vacation and the seventh wave of Covid-19 have had a heavy impact on the number of donations, and by extension the available blood reserves.
Only 50 to 60% of daily needs covered in Île-de-France
“We always have fewer donors in the summer, but this year we are starting the summer season with stocks historically low“Warns Dr. Michèle Villemur, spokesperson for the EFS Île-de-France. “There was a response to the appeal launched at the end of June, and we thank the donors for it, but it is unfortunately insufficient”, she adds, specifying that “there has been an increase in the number of donations , but which very quickly stabilized at a level below our needs“. While at least 110 000 blood bags should be constantly available at national level, only 92 000 were this Wednesday, July 20, 2022.
Especially since blood stocks have a very limited shelf life : 42 days for red blood cells, only seven for platelets. Every day, at least 1,700 donations should be made in Île-de-France to cover transfusion needs. “We reach between 50 and 60% of this objective at the moment, ”laments the spokesperson.
The Covid-19 and the difficult recruitment of nursing staff in question
In question, in addition to the usual holiday departures this season, the upsurge in the number of patients with Covid-19. “Donors cancel their appointments because they are sick and we also have to give up collections because our staff is contaminated,” explains Michèle Villemur. The emergence of teleworkalso, limits the number of collections in the workplace, and therefore the filling capacity of blood stocks.
Dr. Michèle Villemur also points to “a strong recruitment difficulty healthcare staff”, reducing the daily collection capacity in the donation centres. “Ile-de-France, even more than the others, is no longer a very attractive region. We are working to counter this phenomenon, ”she says.
” He is urgent that donors return in the donation centers, and that those who can get involved. In France, only 4% of the population donates blood, we can do better,” says the spokesperson.
