In Palanga – traditional Rotary sports games and charity run

Lithuanian Rotary district manager Jurgita Turulienė.

On the first weekend of September, hundreds of Rotarians and their families will gather for the traditional sports games in Palanga – “Rotariada”. The twenty-first Rotarian sports festival is expected to welcome close to a thousand participants from Lithuania and guests from foreign countries whose goal is not only to exercise, but also to support Lithuanian Paralympians. This year, the Rotarians will go even further – the funds collected in the first-ever charity run will be used to install fresh water stations at the resort.

On September 1-4, Rotarians flooding Palanga’s sports arena and courts will compete in 14 different sports, such as beach volleyball, basketball, chess, tennis, billiards, darts, golf and others. 27 sets of medals will be distributed in the competition.

A delegation of the Lithuanian Paralympic Committee will also arrive in Palanga. The Paralympians have already introduced Rotarians and guests to two Paralympic events – shot put and sitting volleyball. The last event will be a qualifying event for the first time in Rotariada this year.

Although everyone is united by sport, the participants of the festival set even bigger goals for themselves.

“This year, for the first time, in addition to traditional sports events, we will also compete in the charity run “For a clean Baltic”, which will take place on September 3. All funds raised during the run will be used to install fresh water stations at the resort. We invite everyone who cares about ecology to join. We hope that the built fresh water stations will significantly reduce the use of plastic in the resort,” said Jurgita Turulienė, Lithuanian Rotary district manager.

Having completed 10 marathons herself – in Vilnius, Kaunas, New York, Berlin, Chicago and Boston, this autumn she is preparing to start the London marathon, J. Turulienė invites everyone to join and run for ecology.

“We invite not only Rotarians and their family members, friends, but also residents of Palanga and Klaipėda’s surrounding regions, resort guests, everyone who cares about the environment and the Baltic Sea to run together. And it doesn’t matter whether you run or just walk. If possible, you will be able to choose the length of the route, which will wind through the most beautiful places of the resort”, – Rotary manager Jurgita invited people to register for the run.

The 5 km track will wind from the Palanga stadium through the botanical park, Meilės alėja, Palanga bridge and Basanavičius street. Those who want to complete 10 km will run the same route twice. Children under the age of 12 are invited to run one lap at Palanga Stadium for free.

“Harmony with nature and each other is the guarantee of our beautiful future. Together we can do more, so I invite everyone to join the run “For a clean Baltic” and contribute to the noble goal of this event – the construction of fresh water stations in Palanga, which will encourage the use of less plastic! The future depends on us, so even the smallest steps are important!” – says one of the ambassadors of running, middle- and long-distance runner, multiple Lithuanian champion, Olympian Vaida Žūsinaitė
