In order to avoid shortages, medicines may be imported, without sanitary registration: Cofepris

The Federal Commission for Protection against Health Risks (COFEPRIS) said that the current regulations in Mexico prevent the government from buying medicines that are not in the national market, as in the case of cancer drugs, so in order to avoid shortages, now they can import medicines, yet if they have no sanitary record in the country.

“The regulations in force in the country have tied the government in different ways to obtain medicines that are not in the Mexican market, so a broad agreement is published that allows the purchase of medicines anywhere in the world, with the objective fundamental to avoid shortages as is happening in the case of cancer drugs in other countries, including the United States. “

Through a statement, the body headed by José Novelo Baeza, stressed that the Agreement published in the DOF on the Regulation of Health Supplies seeks to guarantee health protection.

Health supplies are determining factors for compliance with National Development Plan and the National Health Plan 2019-2024 of the Government of Mexico, where it is established that every person has the right to health protection, guaranteeing the correct and timely provision of services by establishing a real-time control system for the supply of medicines and health supplies “.

He affirmed that the agreement establishes that the quality of imported medicines must be guaranteed through Cofepris regulatory measures, that all lots of medicine entering the country will have to be analyzed in the laboratory of the Analytical Control Commission and Extension of Coverage of this commission and its origin will be from countries that have a regulatory framework equal to the national one.

“The medicines must have been used in the population of these countries and have a health record of their country of origin.”

In the case of medicines without sanitary registration in Mexico, the agreement establishes a period of five business days after importation to start the registration process in Mexico, which will be faster with the objective of applying to patients who require them.

“This action will increase the supply for the health sector, with authorized drugs in our national territory and with this encourage the reduction of monopolies,” said the regulatory commission.
