The Italian Ministry of Transport stops sending photos from speed cameras to traffic violators, and the reason for the decision is privacy concerns, DPA reported.
Instead, car and motorcycle drivers will only receive fine notices at their homes, according to a new regulation published today by the transport department.
The authorities will keep the pictures from the automatic cameras, which show the faces of the offenders, and will only use them if people want to appeal their fine.
The regulations will also apply to foreign tourists caught by speed cameras on Italian roads.
The regulation has already been approved by the Italian data protection agency, Corriere della Sera newspaper reported.
In Italy, as in other countries, there have been repeated cases of traffic offenders getting into trouble after speed camera footage showed they were in the car with people they weren’t expected to be traveling with. Because of this problem, several marriages have already been destroyed, the newspaper writes.
Italy has more than 11,000 speed cameras, more than any other European country.
