Hundreds of people got the new coronavirus in India after participating, with a few days’ gap, in the marriage and later in the funeral of a young man who possibly contracted covid-19, a local medical officer reported Wednesday.
More than 400 people attended the nuptials, on June 15, of a 26-year-old man with symptoms of having been infected. The young man died two days after getting married, and hundreds of people returned to attend his funeral.
“So far 111 people, who participated in the wedding or funeral, have tested positive. All the others were identified and placed in isolation, ”Raj Kishor Chaudhary, chief medical officer of Patna, the regional capital of Bihar, told AFP.
Authorities established a special camp to test the people present at both meetings after an outbreak in the village.
The groom’s family is being investigated. Doctors do not know if it was the young boyfriend, and then deceased, the cause of all the contaminations, since his body was quickly cremated by his family before the diagnostic test was performed.
None of his relatives, including his new wife, tested positive.
A computer engineer in Guargaon, a satellite city of New Delhi, returned home just a week before the marriage and suffered from fever and diarrhea, said Raj Kishor Chaudhary. He was briefly hospitalized, but his family took him home on medication and celebrated his marriage despite everything.
Due to the covid-19 epidemic that is still ongoing in the country, India limits weddings to 50 people, and funerals to 20 people.
India has recorded 17,400 deaths from coronavirus and 585,493 reported cases to date, numbers in rapid progression.
