In Noisy-le-Grand, a traveling truck to fight against the digital divide

An association offers all those who can benefit from free training to better understand and use computers and smartphones.

For several years, all of Thérèse Diallot’s emails were copied to another box and then went directly to her trash. This retired midwife was hacked without realizing it. She understood this by going to train in the DigiTruck truck (financed by the company Huawei) which is currently stopping off in Noisy-le-Grand (until April 16).

“It was the trainer who unblocked the situation for me. I represent an association, I needed the computer tool, especially to communicate with the team which is in the Central African Republic. It is necessary to know these things”she says.

For the past week, she has been conscientiously following a module every day: browsing the internet safely, doing her online formalities or learning how to use a word processor properly.

“It’s not my age, it’s for young people computing. I had to update myself on certain points. I’m 66 years old, I have a computer, I know basic little things but no more”she continues.

A basic for some, but a complex subject for many people. “35% of the population say they have difficulty with digital technology. It’s a big obstacle with everyday procedures. We have to bring these people in for training, but how to capture them? By definition, they don’t go on the internet”explains Léa Roué, project manager at the WeTechCare association.

The truck crisscrossed the Hauts-de-France for a few months in 2021. 1,500 people flocked there according to the company. The WeTechCare association defends this partnership (which also represents a great marketing action for the company and its products and which refused to communicate the cost of the operation): “it’s a necessary device. They are taught to send their first email, to click on reply. You have to work on trust, a lot of people are all about IT and this truck is great because people can come for free and realize that it is accessible”says Léa Roué.

For her part, Thérèse Diallot is looking forward to her next training sessions. She has already learned how to protect herself on the internet: “Now I know how to detect malicious emails. Before, I was afraid to use a computer, I didn’t know how to recognize if it was dangerous. But now I can click and know if it’s a good site or not”.

During her next session, she will learn how to pay online. And a new world will open up to her, surely to the detriment of her personal finances.
