in Nîmes the € 200,000 in aid from the town hall to the organizer of bullfights Simon Casas is controversial

To compensate for the losses linked to the Covid-19 pandemic, the city council of Nîmes must grant this Saturday, December 19 aid to the production company of Simon Casas, which organizes bullfights.

It is a sum which has made the political community of Nîmes (Gard) react for a few days: 201,587 €.

This is the amount of aid proposed to the vote in municipal council to support the company Simon Casas Production. For Frédéric Pastor, deputy in charge of the festivities at the town hall of Nîmes, the objective is to compensate for six months of bullfighting inactivity, the events having been canceled because of the health crisis: “Bullfighting is a very important activity in our city, and we consider it unfair that the delegatee alone bears the consequences of the crisis”.

An injustice for some elected officials

The budget includes fixed charges related to bullfighting but above all 66% royalty exemptions. Exemptions that cringe the teeth of some business leaders in the city, but also opposition elected officials such as the Communist Sylvaine Fayet. According to her, it is up to the delegatee therefore to Simon Casas’ company to assume the losses.

that means that when there are losses we municipalize, but when we earn money, this time we privatize. This is not my conception of public service.

Sylvaine Fayet, PCF municipal councilor

The elected opposition member should propose to the city council to wait to learn more about the state aid mechanisms, then to revise the contract with the company of Simon Casas.
