In Nigeria, the social network “Twitter” is banned indefinitely / Article

In Nigeria, the largest African country in terms of population, the government has banned Twitter for an indefinite period. Millions of Nigerians today could not access the popular site. The Nigerian Ministry of Information has justified the ban on Twitter with “the continued use of the platform for activities that could jeopardize the existence of Nigeria as a whole”. The government’s move has been widely condemned.

The Nigerian government’s decision to ban Twitter came a few days after the social network deleted President Muhammad Bukhari’s record for violating the site’s rules.

In his recording, Bukhari had mentioned the Nigerian civil war of 1967-1970 and threatened to speak to those who could not behave in a language they understood. Most likely, the president’s message was addressed to regional separatists.

Twitter has expressed “deep concern” over the site’s ban in Nigeria, but human rights organization Amnesty International said the government was restricting Nigerians’ right to freedom of expression and access to information.
