According to the report, the fighters have entered the capital of Imo, Overri, in pickup trucks and buses. Using explosives, they entered the prison grounds and released 1,844 prisoners.

The militants, who also had machine guns and missiles, were involved in the shooting with prison guards, as well as attacking several police and army buildings in the city.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but the police have blamed the Igbo separatists. Igbo is 98% of the population of Imo.
