UNUSUAL – A breathtaking but dizzying view of New York. Since Friday, December 1, visitors to the Top of the Rock, the observatory located on the Comcast Building, the tallest building in the famous Rockefeller Center, can take a seat on a brand new attraction: a steel beam installed on the 69th floor of the building and intended to recreate one of the most iconic photos of the 20th century.
As you can see in our video above, the original photograph titled “ Lunch atop a Skyscraper ”, which means “ Lunch at the top of a skyscraper », appeared in the New York Herald Tribune in 1932, while the skyscraper was still under construction. We see 11 workers taking their lunch break… sitting on a beam which hangs nearly 260 meters above the ground. On its website, Rockefeller Center explains that the photo was a patriotic publicity stunt for the construction industry.
Now, for the sum of 25 dollars (around 23 euros), which is added to the price of entry into the skyscraper, those who wish can recreate this historic photo (while being secured with belts). Two parallel beams were installed and are lifted up to 3.6 meters above the terrace before being rotated 180° to ensure incredible views of Central Park.
On TikTok, Internet users expressed their enthusiasm about the new attraction, which opens while the party is already in full swing at the Rockefeller: the shopping center’s unmissable Christmas tree was lit for the 91st time in its history on the 29 november. The 24 meter high tree sits above the legendary ice rink, marking the start of the December festivities.
