New York State (United States) has set itself the target of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 85% by 2050 compared to their 1990 levels. This ambition is supported by a large number of transition and development programs. energy efficiency.

One of them, baptized Smart Street Lighting NY, thus concerns intelligent public lighting in New York State. It has already enabled the installation of 286,000 smart streetlights throughout the state, especially in the towns of Albany, Rochester, Syracuse or White Plains.

On October 11, 2021, the state’s public electricity company, the New York Power Authority (NYPA), announced that it had completed the first phase of the work equipment intelligent public lighting and energy efficiency in the city of Utica.

In all, the NYPA, which is the largest public electricity company in the United States, has already installed 7,140 smart LED street lights in the city. Its objective, dans the framework of Smart Street Lighting NY, is to replace 50,000 streetlights in Utica with smart, energy-efficient models by 2025.

Reduce the electricity consumption of public lighting

Installed LED models consume between 50% and 65% less than existing street lights. The sensors and the smart grid bricks that accompany them also make it possible to control their light intensity in real time and to detect faults remotely.

The set will provide lighting better suited to the needs of the city, in terms of brightness and safety in the city, while achieving significant savings. At a total cost of $ 11.1 million, funded entirely by NYPA, replacing these streetlights is expected to save Utica about $ 1.5 million per year.

More generally, these smart streetlights are the first brick in a much larger and more ambitious smart grid program. If successful on the street lighting front, other applications could be implemented.

« Smart Street Lighting NY is a clear success for the state and the NYPA intends to proactively pursue the installation of LED street lighting. We are on the right track not only to meet but to exceed the governor’s target ”, congratulated Gil C. Quiniones, CEO of NYPA.

The mayor of Utica, Robert M. Palmieri, believes that this project allows “To improve our infrastructure, upgrade our technology, reduce our carbon footprint and provide better customer service”.
