Drone footage shows detainees in protective suits busy placing coffins in mass graves on Hart Island, as shown by New york post.
This island regularly serves as the last home for the needy who have not been claimed by their families. In this period of health crisis, Hart Island therefore continues to welcome victims of the coronavirus for whom there has been no place elsewhere.
It is usually detainees who carry out these burials.
Typically, around 25 bodies are buried each week by low-wage inmates working on the island. With the spread of covid-19, this number gradually began to increase. There are about two dozen bodies a day, five days a week, buried on the island, said Jason Kersten, spokesperson for the Department of Correction, which oversees the burials.
