A Covid-19 vaccination certificate will be required to attend indoor activities in New York, New York Mayor Bill de Blazio said on Tuesday.
A certificate will be required to attend restaurants, gyms and shows. Such a requirement has already been introduced in several European countries, but New York has become the first US city to take such a step.
“If you have been vaccinated, you have a key, you can open the door. But if you are unvaccinated, unfortunately, you will not be able to take part in many things, ”de Blāzio told a news conference.
He said the “Key to NYC” certificate would be introduced on August 16, followed by a month-long transition period, but it would take effect on September 13 with the start of the new school year.
At the same time, de Blāzio acknowledged that a mandatory certificate could cause resentment.
“Not everyone will agree, I understand. But for many, this will be a life-saving action, “said the mayor.
In New York, about 40% of the population has still not been vaccinated, allowing the more contagious virus delta to spread, as shown by the steady increase in infections in recent weeks.
