In New York, a former Vannetais recounts the American elections – Vannes

Lecture : 2 minutes

After growing up in Vannes, Victor Larue moved to New York for ten years. He therefore saw the American elections from the inside. If he could not vote, he confides in us his fear that Trump will be re-elected.

After passing his baccalaureate in Vannes, Victor Larue left to realize his American dream, by joining a dance school in New York. It was ten years ago. And since then, he hasn’t left the Big Apple. He found a job there, at L’Oréal, in charge of consumer marketing for the Biolage brand. And he started a family there, having been the father of two adorable twins for two years.

As in 2016, it is as a spectator that he attends the American elections. He does not have American nationality and therefore cannot vote. To ask for it, he would have to have at least five years of green card and he only has three … This does not prevent him from following these elections closely.

He draws a very negative assessment of the Trump presidency: “On a social level, the country has never been so divided. This division is felt as far as New York, a city populated by immigrants (legal or not). With President Trump’s statements, many people felt stigmatized, and the city has seen a lot of protests. At each, the city is cordoned off and the shops are covered with wood to prevent vandalism and looting. It is not the New York that I knew ten years ago now ”.

“New York is a bubble”

The pandemic did not spare the city: “The Covid-19 unfortunately affected New York, in terms of health obviously… We had extremely high figures, making New York one of the world’s leading centers. Many people have left the city, and since the gradual reopening of businesses, we feel that the dynamism is not returning ”.

The consequences are also felt at the social level: “The number of homeless people has increased and it is not rare to see families in the street”.

On the political level, he insists: “Compared to the electoral campaign, New York is overwhelmingly democratic, we are not part of a swing state, so we had very few campaign demonstrations … However, he there is the fear of a re-election of Trump, because New York is a bubble and the rest of the United States is very different! “
