NEW YORK – One in four New York City residents may have been infected with COVID-19, according to a study by the local government, which canceled the June 23 primary election and extended lockdown beyond May 15.
In the Big Apple, the epicenter of the pandemic in the United States, the number of positives now rises to 24.7 percent, so it is estimated that more than two million people may have already suffered from the disease in the city.
The data also confirms that the Latino community has been affected in a very disproportionate way, since 32 percent of the people studied have suffered from the disease, compared to 16.9 percent among African-Americans, 14.6 percent among the Asians and 8.9 percent among whites.
Minorities are especially concentrated in the New York City area, the worst hit, while the rest of the state, more rural, is mainly white.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo noted that research shows that the virus is widespread in the state and its mortality is lower than initially thought.
In an unprecedented move, New York State canceled the Democratic presidential primary, set for June 23.
Cuomo said the stay-at-home order will extend beyond May 15, but that restrictions could be relaxed in some areas that have sufficient hospital capacity and meet other criteria.
Hair salons and restaurants were reopening in some areas of the United States, while other regions were considering doing so in several weeks. “I am convinced that we will have enough evidence to reopen.
