As the newspaper notes, pro-democracy activists have called for a general strike on May 2 to renew the dynamics of street protests. As a result, new mass protests took place in a number of cities in Myanmar. The rallies were also joined in Manchester (UK), Milan (Italy) and Taipei (Taiwan).
The actions that took place in Myanmar were harshly dispersed by the military. In the city of Khpakant, a man was killed and 20 others were wounded as a result of shelling. According to eyewitnesses, the military threw grenades at the protesters.
Three more people died in the city of Vetlet – the protesters there were first fired with rubber cartridges, and when they did not disperse, the military switched to combat. Also, one protester was killed in the cities of Hsipau and Naungkio.
