In response to the increase in Covid-19 cases, Munich will make it mandatory to wear face masks in several areas of the city, German federal state authorities said on Monday.
Other restrictions on people’s behavior in public and private will also be strengthened.
The new rules will take effect on Thursday.
Starting on Thursday, no more than five people or two households will be able to gather together, Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter said.
On Sunday in Munich, the seven-day cumulative number of infections per 100,000 population reached 55.6, which is above the limit set by the authorities.
Bavarian Prime Minister Marcus Zeder said in an earlier interview with regional radio that he supported the requirement to wear masks in areas where social distance cannot be observed.
He expressed mixed feelings about the photos, which show that people at various weekend pubs in Munich celebrated the planned start of the canceled traditional beer festival “Oktoberfest”.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the famous Oktoberfest beer festival was canceled this year.
The Robert Koha Institute (RKI) reported on Saturday that 2,297 new cases of Covid-19 infection were registered in Germany in 24 hours, the highest number of infections since April.
On Monday, the RKI reported only 922 new cases of Covid-19 in 24 hours, but this is due to incomplete data, as not all healthcare institutions provide the institute with the latest information on weekends.
