Now, the clinical trial of the CanSino vaccine conducted by the Salvador Zubirán Institute in Mexico City start testing a second dose to boost the presence of antibodies.

In an email sent to participants of the clinical trial that started in November 2020, and of which Xataka Mexico has a copy, the patients who were inoculated are informed that a second dose will be applied at the end of May.



The vaccine will also be applied to the group that at that time, at the time of the first application, was in the group to which a placebo. For this group, it will only be their first application.

To the letter in the mail signed by the department of infectology of the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition Salvador Zubirán the following reads:

“Recent information with this and the other vaccines already approved by the regulatory agencies of the United States, the European Union, COFEPRIS (Mexico), and other parts of the world, show that their immunogenicity decreases significantly at six months. Therefore, it is decided that the people who received placebo in this study will receive the first dose of as5-nCoV vaccine and in those participants who received the vaccine, a second dose will be administered “

The first indication that a second dose of CanSino is approaching

The email also specifies that all participants will continue in the study for a total of 13 months, after which time the efficacy of the biological will be retested. Next November a second dose will be offered to those who were part of the placebo group last year and who will now receive their first dose.

Cut to April 5, 3.3 million CanSino vaccines have been applied in Mexico. A part of them has been strategically applied to older adults and teachers of various entities with the idea of ​​facilitating the logistics of application, since it is the only one used in Mexico that is managed under a single dose scheme. The first reports of low antibodies after six months of CanSino application appeared in September of last year, but then Zeng Guang, chief scientist at the Center for Disease Prevention and Control, said the information had yet to be analyzed, in a statement that takes up Bloomberg. Six months later CanSino Biologics recognized low in antibodies and its chief scientist, Zhu Tao, said a second dose could increase efficacy by up to 90%.
